A New Ministry at St. Mark

We have begun a very important new ministry at St. Mark: Respect Life Ministry. At the heart of the Church’s mission of the New Evangelization is promoting the dignity of each and every person as created in the image and likeness of God and ensuring that every person’s right to life—from the moment of conception to natural death is defended, promoted and protected. As St. John Paul II reminds us, “To rediscover and make others rediscover the inviolable dignity of every human person makes up an essential task, in a certain sense, the central and unifying task of the service which the Church and the lay faithful in her are called to render to the human family.” Therefore, this is important work for all of us to do and support in any way we can.

As we kick-off this ministry at St. Mark, there are a couple of important events coming up that provide a great opportunity for us to heed the call of St. John Paul II to protect and defend human life. The first is the 40 Days for Life Campaign that will be kicking off in the Diocese of Colorado Springs on September 26th. The 40 Days for Life Campaign is a time over 40 days in which we are called to pray, fast, and also give our public witness in an effort to bring about the end of abortion. There are two ways in which we can participate in the 40 Days for Life Campaign. The first is to spend two hours in prayerful witness at the Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs on Saturday, October 13th and October 27th. Parishioners can sign up to meet and pray together from 10 a.m. to Noon on either day. This is also an important public witness that can often encourage a mother who is planning to abort her unborn baby to change her mind and turn away. We cannot underestimate the power of our silent prayerful witness and the lives that can be saved through it.

The second way that we can participate in the 40 Days for Life Campaign is for families to choose a day to dedicate to prayer and fasting for the end of abortion. Families can also choose to spiritually adopt an unborn child in danger of abortion and daily pray for that child and his/her mother. There will be informational tables after all the Masses this weekend for individuals or families to sign up for the 40 Days of life Campaign.

In addition, October is also Respect Life Month and this is a time each year that the Church dedicates to prayer and education on abortion and all of the respect life issues. Please keep an eye on the bulletin throughout October for more information on how you and your family can learn more about these important life issues and how we can truly make a difference in our community and our country in promoting and defending human life in all of its stages.

“If you want equal justice for all, and true freedom and lasting peace, then, America, defend life! All the great causes that are yours today will have meaning only to the extent that you guarantee the right to life and protect the human person.” —St. John Paul II
